Convert SWS to another file type
To convert SWS worksheets to another format, you need SageMath or other Data software.
Convert a file to SWS
To convert other file formats to the "Mathematical Worksheet File" file type, you need software like SageMath or a similar tool.
About SWS files
.SWS files are primarily Sage Worksheets used by the open-source mathematics system SageMath. These files contain executable code cells, mathematical algorithms, and rendered data plots. A secondary but common variant is the PowerDesigner Workspace File, which is used by SAP PowerDesigner to store project hierarchies. You may also encounter the .SWS extension used as a Science Workshop Session file by PASCO scientific or as a script file in older screenwriting software like Final Draft.
The main disadvantage of the .SWS format is its rigid reliance on proprietary ecosystems. A SageMath .SWS file requires a local or hosted instance of a Sage Notebook server to run and view the document natively. They are not natively supported by web browsers or standard document viewers, meaning you cannot easily share your calculations with a non-technical colleague. Similarly, reading an SAP workspace file requires an expensive enterprise subscription. Because of these harsh limits, users typically need to convert .SWS files to PDF, HTML, or TXT to share static reports, or to IPYNB (Jupyter Notebook) to modernize their data workflows.
Because the .SWS format is either a compressed internal archive (like a BZ2 wrapper for SageMath) or a highly structured XML file (for PowerDesigner), standard online converters fail to parse them correctly. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. Our tool will inspect the file and attempt to show the underlying text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or extracting the assets may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SWS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert SWS file to MP3, WAV, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WMA, M4A, AIFF, OPUS, ALAC, APE or WV, you can use SageMath or similar software from the "Mathematics and System Workspaces" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MIDI, AAC, TTA, AU, WV, DTS, MID, FLAC, RA, MP3, PCM or WAV files to SWS, try SageMath or another comparable tool in the "Mathematics and System Workspaces" category.
The SWS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SWS converter.
