About SWITCH files
The .SWITCH file is an encrypted container used by Egress Software Technologies to securely transmit sensitive emails and documents. Organizations use these packages to enforce data protection policies. To read the contents, users must install the Egress Client or authenticate via the Egress Web Access portal. The main disadvantage of the .SWITCH format is its strict proprietary nature and friction for the recipient. It requires account creation, password management, and an active internet connection to authenticate. If the sender revokes access, or if you forget your credentials, the file becomes permanently inaccessible. Standard web browsers and operating systems cannot read these files natively. Once you authenticate and open the package in the official software, you should immediately export the contents to standard formats like PDF, DOCX, or XLSX for long-term storage. Because this format is intentionally encrypted, standard online converters fail to process it. Only the original software can properly read or export the decrypted data. We can inspect the file headers and confirm it is a valid Egress package. If our analysis detects unencrypted embedded metadata, viewing basic file properties may still be possible.
