About STONE files

A .stone file is a maliciously encrypted file created by the Stone ransomware, which is a known variant of the Dharma, Crysis, or Chaos ransomware families. When a system is compromised, the malware targets standard data files - such as JPG, ZIP, PDF, and PNG - and locks them using military-grade encryption (typically AES or RSA). The original filename is modified to append an attacker ID, an email address, and the .stone extension. For broader context on how these attacks operate, refer to the Ransomware Wikipedia page.

Victims naturally want to convert these files back to their original target formats to recover their data. The severe disadvantage of a .stone file is that it is completely inaccessible without a unique, private cryptographic key. Because the internal data structure is scrambled, standard applications like Adobe Acrobat or native operating system tools will report the file as corrupted or unreadable.

This is a closed, maliciously proprietary format. Standard online converters will fail to process it because they rely on readable file headers (like those found in a standard ZIP or JPG), which the ransomware has deliberately overwritten. The only way to reverse the process is via a dedicated decryption tool. This analysis helps you verify the ransomware variant's signature, read any plain-text ransom notes appended to the end of the code, and determine if the file is genuinely encrypted or merely corrupted.

Convert.Guru analyzes your STONE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SWITCH, BOOA, BBOO and BMI files.

The STONE Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our STONE converter.
