About STONE files

A .STONE file is not a standard document or image; it is a regular file - such as a JPG photo, PDF document, or ZIP archive - that has been maliciously locked by the Crysis, Dharma, or Chaos ransomware families. When this malware infects a system, it encrypts user data using high-strength algorithms (often AES + RSA) and appends the .stone extension to the original filename (e.g., invoice.pdf becomes invoice.pdf.id-1234.[email].stone).

The real problem is that these files are completely unusable in standard software; Adobe Acrobat or Microsoft Word will report them as corrupt or unrecognizable because the file header is scrambled. Users typically encounter this format only after a security breach, facing a ransom note demanding payment for a private decryption key. Do not convert these files using standard image converters, as they cannot bypass the encryption. The only viable "conversion" is decryption or restoration. For recovery, identifying the specific ransomware variant is critical to checking if a free decryptor is available from security vendors like Emsisoft or Kaspersky. If decryption fails, the best target format is simply the file's original state, restored via off-site backups.

Convert.Guru analyzes your STONE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SWITCH, BOOA, BBOO and BMI files.
