About SVY files

A .SVY file is a specialized survey data container used primarily by geospatial, radar, and pipeline measurement applications. The most common variant is the Survey Mapping Data file used by Carlson Software. Other critical uses include Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) projects by IDS GeoRadar, sonar mapping by Humminbird, and pipeline corrosion surveys by Tinker & Rasor. These files store raw field measurements, coordinates, elevations, and sensor readings.

The primary disadvantage of the .SVY format is severe vendor lock-in. It is a proprietary file type that is unrecognizable to standard web browsers, operating systems, or general spreadsheet software. Reading the data natively often requires an expensive commercial software license, making it frustrating to share raw survey results directly with clients or engineering stakeholders without prior processing.

To make this data universally usable, professionals must convert it to standardized targets. The best conversion targets include CSV or TXT for spreadsheet and statistical analysis, or vector formats like DXF and DWG for direct integration into architectural and civil CAD workflows.

This closed, proprietary format is notoriously difficult to open or convert. Explain clearly why standard online converters fail: they lack the proprietary parsing logic required to decode specialized vendor-specific binary data. Emphasize that often only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, such as plain text coordinate data, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SVY file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted QDC, GTT and FBK files.

The SVY Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SVY converter.
