The .STU extension primarily identifies proprietary project files created by Pinnacle Studio, a widely used non-linear video editing suite. Unlike standard video containers like MP4 or AVI, an .STU file does not contain actual playable video or audio data. Instead, it functions as a minimal database - saving your timeline edits, transition settings, and file paths to the raw media stored elsewhere on your computer. This creates a significant problem: you cannot open these files in media players like VLC, nor can you upload them to video sharing platforms. To obtain a usable video, the project must be rendered (exported) within the original software environment.
A substantial secondary use case involves industrial automation. Here, .STU files serve as PLC project archives for Schneider Electric Control Expert (formerly Unity Pro). These contain logic and configuration data for programmable logic controllers. These files are strictly proprietary and often large, requiring specific, expensive engineering software to interpret. For archiving or review purposes, users often seek to convert the logic diagrams within these files to PDF documentation, though direct conversion without the host software is difficult due to the binary format structure. Less frequently, .STU files appear as game progress saves for Spintires: MudRunner.
