About STAR files

A .STAR file is primarily a Self-defining Text Archive and Retrieval format used by RELION for Cryo-EM (cryo-electron microscopy) image processing. Alternatively, enterprise IT environments encounter .STAR files as Appliance Upgrade Archives for HPE StoreServ Management Console. The scientific version is a plain text database, but these files routinely exceed hundreds of megabytes, causing standard text editors to freeze or crash. The nested loop structure is also not natively supported by standard spreadsheet software, making data extraction highly frustrating. On the IT side, HPE .STAR files are proprietary locked archives requiring specific hardware managers to deploy. To make Cryo-EM data usable for general statistical analysis, convert .STAR to CSV or TXT. For HPE firmware payloads, extracting the contents to ISO or TAR is often necessary for manual inspection. Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your STAR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SGA, NPZ and SDU files.

The STAR Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our STAR converter.
