About ST7 files

The .st7 file extension serves two entirely different, highly specialized purposes. It is most commonly a Structural analysis model created by Strand7 (also known as Straus7) finite element analysis (FEA) software. Alternatively, it can be an Astronomical CCD camera image generated by legacy Santa Barbara Instrument Group (SBIG) hardware, specifically the ST-7 camera line. Both formats are strictly proprietary and come with significant disadvantages. Strand7 models require a very expensive software license to open, effectively locking your engineering data behind a corporate paywall. Meanwhile, the SBIG ST-7 image is an obsolete format that modern web browsers and standard image viewers cannot read natively without dedicated plugins or specialized astrophysics software. If you need to share these files, you must convert them. Strand7 data should ideally be exported to PDF reports or generic solver decks like CSV or DAT. SBIG images should be converted to FITS for scientific use, or JPG for standard viewing, though converting to JPG will destroy the high-bit depth dynamic range captured by the telescope. These file formats are notoriously difficult to open or convert because they use closed data structures. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. However, convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. Just drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

The ST7 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ST7 converter.
