About SSI files
The .ssi extension is famously ambiguous, primarily serving two completely different industries: Architecture and Web Development.
First, and most commonly in file volume (approx. 49%), an .ssi file is a proprietary bitmap image associated with Nemetschek Allplan CAD projects. These are often technically standard JFIF (JPEG) images masquerading with a different extension to link specifically to project metadata. The biggest obstacle here is that standard image viewers like Microsoft Photos or Apple Preview will not recognize the extension, leaving you unable to preview project assets without launching the heavy Allplan environment. For accessibility, these should be converted to standard JPG or PNG files.
Secondly, the extension stands for Server Side Include, a legacy web development technique used to insert content (like headers or footers) into multiple HTML pages dynamically. These are plain text files containing HTML fragments and sometimes script commands processed by the web server (like Apache). If you try to open these directly in a web browser like Chrome or Firefox, they will not render correctly because the browser expects a full page, not a fragment, and cannot execute the server-side directives locally. To view or edit the code, you must treat them as text or convert them to TXT or HTML (though they may still look broken without the parent page).
Less frequently, .ssi files are encrypted user profile data for legacy chat software or survey definitions for Sawtooth Software. These are binary data blobs and are generally not convertible to human-readable formats without the original software.

The SSI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SSI converter.
