About SRE files

The .SRE extension is a classic example of file ambiguity, serving three distinct industries with incompatible formats. Most commonly, it is a Spectrophotometer Data File generated by Thermo Fisher Scientific instruments using VISIONpro software. These files contain raw UV-Vis spectroscopy measurements. The real problem here is proprietary lock-in: you cannot simply drag these files into Microsoft Excel or a standard text editor to analyze your data. To make the data usable for reports or external analysis, you generally need to convert these proprietary logs into universal formats like CSV, XLSX, or plain TXT.

Alternatively, an .SRE file may be a Motorola S-Record, an ASCII-based file format used to convey binary information for EEPROM programming. While these are technically human-readable text files, they are structured for machine parsing, making them difficult to interpret manually. Embedded systems engineers frequently need to convert these .SRE files into raw BIN (Binary) or HEX formats for direct chip programming or memory loading. Less common variants include compiled grammar files for Nuance Speech Recognition or 3D assets for the racing simulator Live for Speed, both of which are highly specific and often lack practical conversion targets outside their native environments.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SRE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The SRE Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SRE converter.
