About SQFS files

The .SQFS file extension represents a SquashFS compressed, read-only file system. Developers use it extensively in Linux environments for Live CDs, router firmware, and embedded system partitions where space is heavily constrained. To access or mount these files natively, administrators typically rely on the command-line tool unsquashfs on Linux. For Windows or macOS users, advanced archive utilities like 7-Zip or PeaZip can sometimes unpack the contents. You can learn more about its technical architecture on the SquashFS Wikipedia page.

Users usually need to convert or extract .SQFS files to analyze internal firmware files or modify a bootable system. The primary disadvantage of this format is its strict read-only nature; you cannot simply edit a file inside the archive without fully unpacking and repacking the entire file system. Furthermore, native Windows and macOS systems do not recognize the format, making it inaccessible to standard desktop users and forcing them to download third-party software.

The best workaround is extracting the contents to a standard archive like TAR or ZIP, or repacking the extracted files as an ISO image. Be aware that extracting a Linux-based file system on a Windows machine will likely strip native file permissions, device nodes, and ownership metadata, which can ruin the firmware if you intend to flash it back.

This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert online because it contains complex hierarchical block structures and specific compression algorithms (like LZMA or ZSTD) rather than standard document data. Often, only the original Linux software can properly read or export the system data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SQFS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SQUASHFS, WSQUASHFS, ISO, BIN, APK and ZIP files.

FAQ

If you want to convert SQFS file to ISO, IMG, DMG, VHD, VMDK, VDI, HDD, QCOW, QCOW2, RAW, VBOX or OVA, you can use Linux or similar software from the "Read-Only Compressed File System" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The SQFS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SQFS converter.
