About SMO files
The .SMO file extension is heavily fragmented and most commonly acts as a Saved Mobile SMS Message exported from early-2000s feature phones using legacy desktop software like Samsung PC Studio or Siemens Mobile Phone managers. In the gaming industry, .SMO files are entirely different: they serve as proprietary 3D model files used in PlayStation 2 and PC games like Winx Club and Wars and Warriors: Joan of Arc (often authored via 3D Studio Max), or as highly compressed Smacker audio files developed by RAD Game Tools. Niche applications also use the format for automotive diagnostic logs in ScanMyOpel and building energy simulations in SIMIEN.
The main disadvantage of .SMO files is their extreme obsolescence and lack of standardization. Because the extension is shared across completely unrelated, closed applications, there is no universal software to open them. Viewing a mobile .SMO backup usually requires outdated 32-bit software that crashes on modern operating systems. Game asset .SMO files are highly proprietary, undocumented, and explicitly engineered to remain locked inside their native game engines.
When dealing with a text message backup, the best conversion targets are standard TXT or CSV files to make the archival data readable on modern devices. For game assets, converting a 3D model to OBJ or FBX, or an audio track to MP3, is the ideal workflow but is technically challenging without specialized modding tools.
Because these formats are closed and completely undocumented, standard online converters fail to process them. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects plain text SMS data or a supported embedded audio/3D format, viewing or conversion may still be possible without needing vintage hardware.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SMO file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert SMO file to OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D, STL, PLY or WRL, you can use Samsung PC Studio or similar software from the "Saved SMS Message Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to SMO, try Samsung PC Studio or another comparable tool in the "Saved SMS Message Storage" category.
The SMO Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SMO converter.
