About SME files
The .SME file format usually acts as a proprietary backup container created by Samsung Kies to store SMS text messages exported from older Samsung feature phones and early Android devices. In a secondary use case, .SME represents an educational concept map file generated by Anastasis SuperMappe Evo. A tiny fraction of these files also function as voice expansion data for Yamaha Genos synthesizers or encrypted archives from SmartEncryptor.
Working with .SME files is notoriously frustrating because they lock your data into proprietary ecosystems. Samsung Kies is officially discontinued abandonware. If you find an old .SME message backup, modern Android and iOS phones cannot restore it. Similarly, SuperMappe concept maps require specialized, paid educational software to open, meaning you cannot easily share a map with someone who lacks the program.
To break out of these vendor locks, you must convert the file. For message backups, convert to CSV for spreadsheet analysis or PDF and TXT for permanent archiving and easy reading. For concept maps, converting to PDF or a raster image like PNG ensures universal compatibility.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SME file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert SME file to BAK, BACKUP, OLD, TMP, TEMP, ARC, ZIP, TAR, GZ, 7Z, RAR or ISO, you can use Samsung Kies or similar software from the "SMS Message Backup Archive" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SNAPSHOT, OLD, IMG, RESTORE, ISO, COPY, VMDK, TMP, VHD, BAK, ARCHIVE or BACKUP files to SME, try Samsung Kies or another comparable tool in the "SMS Message Backup Archive" category.
The SME Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SME converter.
