About SITX files

The .SITX file extension is a StuffIt X Archive, a proprietary compression format created by Aladdin Systems and later acquired by Smith Micro Software. It was heavily used on classic Mac OS and early Mac OS X to compress files and preserve macOS resource forks, which standard ZIP files could not handle at the time. To open these files, users typically need StuffIt Expander or third-party utilities like The Unarchiver on Mac, or 7-Zip on Windows. The main disadvantage of .SITX is its obsolete, proprietary nature. Modern operating systems do not support it natively, forcing users to install legacy, third-party software just to access the contents. Furthermore, modern ZIP and .TAR.GZ formats now fully support Mac-specific metadata, making .SITX completely unnecessary for new archives. Users should extract their .SITX contents and convert them to standard ZIP or 7Z formats for universal sharing. Because .SITX is a closed, proprietary format with advanced legacy compression algorithms, standard online converters often fail to process it. Only the original software can reliably decode the complex data streams. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible without purchasing old software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SITX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SIT, 1 and SEA files.

The SITX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SITX converter.
