About SEA files
A .SEA file is primarily a Self-Extracting Archive, a legacy compression format synonymous with the Classic Mac OS era (pre-OS X). Developed by Aladdin Systems (creators of StuffIt), these files combine compressed data with a small executable program. In the 1990s, this allowed users to share files without requiring the recipient to have unzipping software installed - they simply double-clicked the file to unpack it.
However, the "convenience" of the .SEA format has become its biggest liability. The executable wrapper is compiled for obsolete processor architectures (Motorola 68k or PowerPC). Consequently, attempting to open a .SEA file on a modern Windows PC or a current macOS (Intel or Apple Silicon) will fail, often triggering an "unsupported application" error. The data is trapped inside an executable meant for a computer that hasn't existed for decades. To retrieve your files, you must bypass the execution layer and treat the file purely as a data archive. The most reliable workflow is to convert the contents into a modern, cross-platform format like ZIP or 7Z, ensuring the data remains accessible without needing legacy emulators.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SEA file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert SEA file to ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, GZ, BZ2, XZ, LZMA, CAB, ACE, ARJ or LHA, you can use StuffIt Expander or similar software from the "Legacy Mac Archive" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert XXE, 7Z, Z, PAK, LHA, DEB, UUE, TAR, LZH, ZIP, PKG or RAR files to SEA, try StuffIt Expander or another comparable tool in the "Legacy Mac Archive" category.
The SEA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SEA converter.
