Most commonly, it represents a Zenon Project Backup, generated by COPA-DATA zenon software. These files act as containers for SCADA/HMI project data, effectively freezing the state of an industrial control system for archiving or transfer. Under the hood, the Zenon .sic file is often a standard ZIP archive renamed to obscure its contents. The primary difficulty here is that while the container is standard, the internal XML or binary data requires the specific version of the zenon Editor to interpret correctly.

Alternatively, a .sic file may be a Payroll Data Import file used by DATEV LODAS software. In this context, the file contains sensitive employee compensation data structured for the German taxation system. These files are typically strictly formatted text or binary streams that refuse to open in standard spreadsheet tools like Microsoft Excel without conversion, leading to frustration when auditors or HR managers need to verify raw data without access to the full DATEV suite.
