About SHADOW files
A .shadow file typically functions as a highly secured system file on Unix-like operating systems, including Linux and Apple macOS. It contains encrypted or hashed user passwords to protect them from unauthorized access, solving the security flaw of the older /etc/passwd file which was historically readable by all users. Alternatively, a .shadow file can be a backup shadow copy created by IBM Tivoli FastBack, or an index file used by the Apache Lucene search engine library.
The primary disadvantage of a system .shadow file is that it is locked down by root permissions and heavily encrypted. It is not meant for manual editing or standard conversion. Attempting to open it in a normal text editor usually results in a permission denied error. Furthermore, IBM Tivoli and Lucene files use proprietary or specialized binary formats that require their native software to read.
Converting a system .shadow file usually means exporting the structural text data to TXT or CSV for security auditing, though the passwords will remain as cryptographic hashes (like SHA-512). You cannot "convert" a hash back to a plaintext password. Standard online converters fail to process these files because they lack the necessary decryption keys, root access, or specialized libraries to parse the undocumented proprietary structures of Tivoli backups or Lucene indexes. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SHADOW file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert SHADOW file to BAK, BACKUP, OLD, TMP, TEMP, ARC, ZIP, TAR, GZ, 7Z, RAR or ISO, you can use Linux or similar software from the "System Password Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SNAPSHOT, OLD, IMG, RESTORE, ISO, COPY, VMDK, TMP, VHD, BAK, ARCHIVE or BACKUP files to SHADOW, try Linux or another comparable tool in the "System Password Storage" category.
The SHADOW Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SHADOW converter.
