About SGF files

The .SGF extension primarily denotes the Smart Game Format, a widely adopted standard for recording the history of board games for two players, most notably Go (Weiqi/Baduk), as well as Backgammon and Chess. These files use a text-based tree structure to store moves, variations, and game properties (like player rank, komi, and result).

While .SGF files are technically plain text, they are difficult for humans to read directly due to their heavy use of parentheses and property codes (e.g., ;B[pd]). Users often struggle because standard text editors cannot visualize the board state, and dedicated software like Sabaki or MultiGo is required to replay the game. Furthermore, .SGF files cannot be natively viewed in web browsers or printed as legible game records without conversion.

To overcome these limitations, users should convert .SGF files based on their needs:

Note: A minority of .SGF files may be binary game save files for Rockstar Games titles like Bully (Canis Canem Edit) or 3D model files for the Dragonfly engine. These are proprietary and generally cannot be converted to document formats.
