About SGF files
The .SGF (Smart Game Format) is primarily a text-based format used to store records of board games, most notably Go, but also Chess and Backgammon. Created by Anders Kierulf, it records moves, game metadata, and annotations in a tree structure, often encoded in UTF-8. Alternatively, .SGF acts as proprietary save files for Rockstar Games titles like Bully, or as 3D model files in the Dragonfly game engine. .SGF is highly specialized and presents significant interoperability challenges. While plain text, reading the raw SGF code is nearly impossible for humans due to its nested bracket and coordinate syntax. Sharing game records with non-players requires dedicated software like MultiGo or specific SGF viewers. The format lacks native web browser support and cannot be easily printed or embedded in standard web pages without custom JavaScript parsers. To effectively share game records, convert your file to PDF or PNG for static, visual viewing, or TXT to extract the raw move annotations. For game saves or 3D models, conversion is rarely straightforward as they are proprietary binaries. Drag and drop your .SGF file here to analyze and convert it securely right in your browser.

The SGF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SGF converter.
