About MVP files
The .mvp file extension is primarily used by MAGIX Movie Studio (formerly known as Movie Edit Pro) and the discontinued Serif MoviePlus software. A common misconception is that this file acts like a standard video container (such as MP4 or AVI). In reality, it is a video editing project file - a roadmap that tells the editing software how to assemble your movie. It contains timeline data, cut points, transition settings, and references to media files, but not the actual video or audio footage itself.
This architecture is a major limitation for users trying to share their work. If you send an .mvp file to a friend or try to play it in VLC media player, it will fail because the player cannot access the source video clips located on your specific hard drive. Furthermore, Serif MoviePlus users face the challenge of proprietary lock-in with defunct software, making their projects difficult to access without an old installation. The only way to convert these files into a viewable format is to open them in the original authoring software and use the "Export" or "Render" function. For web distribution, export to H.264 (.MP4); for high-quality archiving, choose ProRes (.MOV).
