About MIDNAM files
A .MIDNAM file is an XML-based configuration document used primarily within the macOS Audio MIDI Setup utility and Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) like Pro Tools and Digital Performer. Its purpose is to map raw MIDI program change numbers and bank select messages to human-readable patch names for external hardware synthesizers. While the format is technically plain text (XML), editing these files manually is tedious and prone to syntax errors due to the strict schema requirements. Users frequently encounter friction when trying to move these definitions to Windows-based environments or DAWs like Cubase (which uses TXT scripts) or Cakewalk (which uses INS files), as .MIDNAM is not natively supported across all platforms. Additionally, simply viewing the list of thousands of synth patches without launching a heavy DAW is impossible without conversion. For editing or cross-platform scripting, converting to standard XML or JSON is recommended. For creating a printable reference list of your synthesizer's banks and presets, converting to PDF is the most practical solution.
Convert.Guru analyzes your MIDNAM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert MIDNAM file to MP3, WAV, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WMA, M4A, AIFF, OPUS, ALAC, APE or WV, you can use Pro Tools or similar software from the "MIDI Device Configuration" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MIDI, AAC, TTA, AU, WV, DTS, MID, FLAC, RA, MP3, PCM or WAV files to MIDNAM, try Pro Tools or another comparable tool in the "MIDI Device Configuration" category.
The MIDNAM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MIDNAM converter.
