About SCENE files

A .SCENE file is a container used to store structural layouts, 3D object coordinates, and environmental data. It is notorious for extreme format fragmentation. Game engines like Star Stable, Unity, and REDengine use compiled binary .SCENE files to load game environments. Conversely, industrial CAD programs like MayCAD use the exact same extension to store aluminum framing designs in standard XML format.

This extension poses significant challenges. Standard online converters fail to process .SCENE files because there is no universal specification. A file created in Unity will not open in MayCAD or Cyberpunk 2077. Most .SCENE variants are proprietary, closed-source, and tightly coupled to a specific application version. You are effectively locked into the original developer's ecosystem, which makes sharing data with external contractors or different software pipelines highly frustrating.

The most practical solution for 3D users is to convert the scene data into universal formats like FBX, OBJ, or GLTF. However, this usually requires you to open the file in the original authoring software to execute the export without losing node hierarchies and texture references.

This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert externally because only the original software holds the correct data parsers. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, such as raw XML data or embedded media, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your SCENE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PWSCENE, SCENC, STEP, PDF, SCENES, UNITY, ASSET and SHORTCUT files.

FAQ

If you want to convert SCENE file to SHORTCUT, OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D, STL or PLY, you can use MayCAD or Game Engines or similar software from the "3D Scene and Level Description" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to SCENE, try MayCAD or Game Engines or another comparable tool in the "3D Scene and Level Description" category.

The SCENE Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SCENE converter.
