About S3I files

The .S3I file is an audio instrument format originally created by Future Crew for Scream Tracker 3, a popular MS-DOS music tracking software from the 1990s. These files store digital audio samples alongside specific playback parameters like loop points, tuning, panning, and volume settings required by the tracker engine. While pivotal in the early demoscene and tracker music culture, the format is highly specialized.

Today, the .S3I format is largely obsolete outside of niche chiptune and tracker communities. The major disadvantage of this format is that modern Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) like Ableton Live or FL Studio completely ignore it. Users attempting to load these vintage samples into contemporary samplers face immediate compatibility errors. The proprietary data structure means standard media players and basic audio converters cannot process the embedded looping and tuning metadata correctly.

To use these sounds today, the best conversion target is a standard WAV or FLAC file, which preserves the raw, uncompressed sample audio, though tracker-specific playback parameters may be lost. Because this is a legacy format, typical online converters usually fail to read the file header.

Convert.Guru analyzes your S3I file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SAMPLE, SF2 and GIG files.
