Convert a file to GIG

To convert other file formats to the "Virtual Instrument Sample File" file type, you need software like Tascam GigaStudio or a similar tool.

About GIG files

The .gig file extension primarily belongs to Tascam GigaSampler or GigaStudio virtual instrument sample files. These are large, RIFF-based containers that hold multi-sampled audio, velocity layers, and complex articulation rules. A secondary use is for Deskew Gig Performer XML session files, which store live routing and plugin states.

The main disadvantage of GigaStudio files is that they are obsolete. The original software was discontinued in 2008. These files are proprietary, often massive (exceeding gigabytes), and require a $100+ specialized sampler to open. You cannot play a .gig file in a standard media player or web browser.

Users typically need to extract the raw audio samples to WAV or convert the instrument mapping to modern formats like SF2 (SoundFont), EXS (Logic Pro), or NKI (Native Instruments Kontakt). Note that complex envelope and filter scripts are often lost during conversion.

Because .gig is a closed, legacy format, standard online converters fail to process it. Often, only the original software or expensive conversion utilities can properly export the mapped data. However, just drag and drop your file to convert.guru to identify the format, view its internal structure, and convert the underlying embedded audio when possible.

Use Convert.Guru to open and convert your GIG file.

Users also converted GIGA, MP3, JPG, EFA, AKP, SF2, MB, MEG, BYTES and KB files.

The GIG Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GIG converter.
