About GIG files

A .GIG file is primarily associated with Tascam GigaStudio (formerly Nemesys GigaSampler), a discontinued software sampler that revolutionized the industry by streaming large sample libraries directly from the hard disk. While these files contain high-quality, multi-sampled instrument sounds (often orchestral), the format is now obsolete. Users typically convert .GIG files because GigaStudio stopped development in 2008 and does not run on modern 64-bit operating systems. Opening these legacy files today often requires specific 'bridge' software or older hardware, creating significant friction for modern music production. To use these sounds in a contemporary DAW like Logic Pro or Cubase, the most practical solution is converting them to NKI for Native Instruments Kontakt, SF2 (SoundFont), or SFZ formats. Tools like Awave Studio are frequently used to perform this conversion while attempting to preserve key mappings and velocity layers. Note: A minority of .GIG files (approx. 6%) may be XML-based session files for Deskew Gig Performer, a live performance plugin host, which are text-readable but functionally distinct from the audio sample format.

The GIG Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GIG converter.
