About SAMPLE files

A .SAMPLE file is generally an inactive template or example file. In most cases, it is a Git hook example script found in the .git/hooks directory, used to demonstrate automation for commits and pushes. Another common variation is an imported audio stream used by the Godot Engine. In rarer cases, the extension acts as a placeholder for raw scientific data, such as UV-Vis spectrum outputs from PerkinElmer spectrophotometers or identity document templates.

To open text-based configuration examples, use text editors like Visual Studio Code or Notepad++. If the file is a Godot audio resource, it requires the Godot Engine. Scientific variations require specialized, proprietary software like PerkinElmer UV WinLab or Ocean Optics OOIBase32.

The main disadvantage of a .SAMPLE file is that it is a generic placeholder, not a standardized format. Operating systems do not know what program to associate with it. A file might contain UTF-8 plain text, a PNG image, an EXE binary, or proprietary spectrometer data. Because the extension offers no clues about the internal structure, standard online converters fail entirely.

Converting these files depends on the internal contents. For a Git hook, conversion usually means just renaming the file to remove the .SAMPLE extension (e.g., renaming pre-commit.sample to pre-commit) to make it an executable shell script (SH). For Godot audio files, you may want to extract the underlying WAV or OGG data.

Because anyone can append the .SAMPLE extension to any file type, blindly renaming or converting it can be frustrating. Just drag and drop your file into convert.guru to identify the format, view its internal text, and convert it when possible. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

The SAMPLE Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SAMPLE converter.
