About S01 files

A .S01 file is a multi-purpose extension used across several distinct software ecosystems. Most frequently, it acts as a temporary file generated by IBM Lotus Notes during active sessions. It is also heavily used in Peru as a health data submission file for the SUSALUD TEDEF platform, and in digital forensics as a split logical image segment in the Expert Witness Format (EWF). Other niche applications include Pile Driving Analyzer logs, MicroStation sheet models, and split archive parts.

Opening these files natively requires the original software that created them. Forensic professionals rely on Guidance Software EnCase or X-Ways Forensics to mount EWF image segments. Health administrators use the official TEDEF_Cliente software to handle submission packages.

The primary disadvantage of the .S01 format is its fragmented and proprietary nature. EnCase and ZipSplitter .S01 files are completely useless on their own; they are just sequentially numbered chunks (following .E01 or .ZIP) that require the master file and all subsequent segments to reassemble the data. Lotus Notes temporary files are typically locked, undocumented system caches that lack a standalone viewer, making them frustrating to archive or share.

Conversion options depend heavily on the underlying file type. If the file is a TEDEF health submission, it utilizes standard ZIP compression and can simply be extracted into standard XML or CSV data formats. Forensic image segments are usually exported as raw DD images to preserve bit-for-bit integrity, rather than converted into consumer document formats.

Because these files belong to closed, proprietary systems or are incomplete archive segments, standard online converters will fail to process them. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. Our tool can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format (such as a standard ZIP structure), viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your S01 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The S01 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our S01 converter.
