About S01 files
The .s01 extension represents a collision of several distinct file formats, requiring specific identification before conversion.
Split Archive Segment (Common): Frequently, this is Part 2 of a spanned archive created by utilities like ZipSplitter or older Corel WordPerfect distributions. These files are binary fragments and cannot be opened alone. They usually accompany a master file (e.g., .exe, .zip, or .s00) that orchestrates the reassembly of the data. Opening them directly in WinZip often results in "corrupt file" errors.
SUSALUD Health Data (9% share): In specific medical data contexts (TEDEF_Cliente), an .s01 file is simply a renamed ZIP archive. These can often be opened by changing the extension from .s01 to ZIP.
Industrial & Engineering:
Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA): Engineers use this format for high-strain dynamic load test logs. These are proprietary binary files viewable only with Pile Dynamics software.
MicroStation: In CAD workflows, this may be a site-level interface configuration file. A known trick is renaming it to m01 to modify user toolboxes.
Lotus Notes Temporary File (13% share): If found in a temp folder, this is likely a transient cache file from HCL Notes (formerly IBM Lotus Notes). These contain no recoverable user data and are typically safe to delete.
Conversion Targets:
For Archives: Do not convert the .s01 file directly. Instead, locate the .exe or Part 1 file and use it to extract the full contents to ZIP or a folder.
For SUSALUD: Rename to ZIP to access the internal XML/Data files.
For PDA/Engineering: Open in the native software and export reports to PDF or raw data to CSV for Excel analysis.
