About RXE files

The .RXE file extension primarily represents a compiled executable program for the LEGO Mindstorms NXT series of programmable robots. Unlike the source project files (RBT or RBTX) used in the LEGO MINDSTORMS software, the RXE file contains the machine-readable instructions that actually run on the NXT Intelligent Brick. A common issue for users is discovering they only have the .RXE file saved; this is a 'read-only' binary format that cannot be easily converted back into a flowchart or source code for editing. It is strictly for execution on the hardware, similar to an EXE on Windows.

Alternatively, in professional surveying, an .RXE file serves as a raw data container for Leica Geosystems total stations. These files store critical measurement observations but are proprietary and incompatible with standard CAD software out of the box. Surveyors often struggle with this lock-in, requiring specific conversion utilities to parse the raw data into usable formats like DXF, CSV, or ASCII for import into AutoCAD or GIS platforms. Whether you are recovering legacy robot code or processing land survey data, determining the correct file lineage is the first step.

Convert.Guru analyzes your RXE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted EXE, LMSP, RBT and MPP files.

The RXE Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RXE converter.
