About RWL files

A .RWL file is an unprocessed raw image captured by Leica digital cameras, such as the Leica M-series or D-Lux. It contains uncompressed, unaltered pixel data directly from the camera's image sensor. This format allows photographers maximum flexibility in post-processing to adjust exposure, white balance, and shadows.

You can open .RWL files using professional photo editing software like Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, Capture One, or open-source decoding tools powered by LibRaw.

The main disadvantages of .RWL files are their massive file size and lack of browser compatibility. Because they are proprietary raw data rather than processed images, they cannot be natively viewed on most mobile devices, embedded in websites, or shared directly on social media. They also lack applied color correction or sharpening, meaning they look flat and dull until manually processed.

Users typically convert .RWL to JPG for web sharing, TIFF for lossless, high-quality printing, or DNG to maintain raw editing capabilities in an open standard. Note that converting to JPG permanently bakes in the current color settings and discards shadow and highlight recovery data.

Because this is a closed, proprietary format, .RWL files are difficult for standard online converters to process. They require complex demosaicing algorithms. Often, only the original specialized photography software can properly read or export the raw sensor data. Just drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported. convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, like an internal JPEG preview, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Use Convert.Guru to open and convert your RWL file.

Users also converted DNG, SVG, ART and JPG files.
