About RWL files

The .RWL file is a proprietary raw image format generated by select digital cameras from Leica Camera AG, particularly the D-Lux and V-Lux series. These files contain the unprocessed pixel data directly from the camera's image sensor, offering photographers the highest possible dynamic range and editing flexibility compared to compressed formats. However, this fidelity comes with significant friction: .RWL files are large, uncompressed, and cannot be opened by standard web browsers or most default image viewers without specific codec packs. They require a "digital darkroom" workflow using software like Adobe Lightroom or Capture One to be viewed correctly; otherwise, the image often appears flat and desaturated. To share these images or use them online, you must convert them. For quick sharing on social media or email, converting to JPG or WebP is ideal. For high-quality printing or archiving without proprietary lock-in, converting to TIFF or the universal DNG format is the recommended best practice.
