Convert RTAB to another file type
To convert RTAB matrix files to another format, you need Panaroo or other Data software.
Convert a file to RTAB
To convert other file formats to the "Data Table or Tablature" file type, you need software like Panaroo or a similar tool.
About RTAB files
The .RTAB file format primarily serves two distinct purposes. In the scientific community, it is heavily used as a bioinformatics data format, specifically representing a gene presence/absence matrix or a Bacterial GWAS unitig matrix. These plain-text, tab-separated tables are generated by pangenome pipelines like Roary and Panaroo, or utilized in analysis software like pyseer and NCBI BLAST. Alternatively, .RTAB acts as a proprietary guitar tablature file created by legacy music software like Tabestry or TablEdit.
A major disadvantage of the .RTAB format is its lack of mainstream application support. Bioinformatics .RTAB matrices frequently contain thousands of rows and columns, easily exceeding the 16,384 column limit of standard spreadsheet tools like Microsoft Excel, causing crashes or silent data truncation. Meanwhile, Tabestry tablature files are closed, proprietary, and largely abandoned, requiring $50+ specialized software simply to view the musical notation.
For bioinformatics files, the best conversion targets are standard CSV or TSV formats, which ensure compatibility with data science tools in Python or R. For tablature, converting to PDF or MIDI is the safest route to preserve the sheet music visually and audibly, though this usually requires the original software.
Because .RTAB files are either highly specialized scientific outputs or obsolete proprietary tabs, standard online converters consistently fail to process them. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. Our platform will inspect the file's internal structure; if it detects a supported underlying text format like a tab-separated matrix, viewing or converting the data into a usable standard format may still be perfectly possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your RTAB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert RTAB file to OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D, STL, PLY or WRL, you can use Panaroo or similar software from the "Bioinformatics Matrix or Tablature" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to RTAB, try Panaroo or another comparable tool in the "Bioinformatics Matrix or Tablature" category.
The RTAB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RTAB converter.
