The .RSV file extension is primarily associated with Sony digital cameras (such as the Alpha A7S III, FX3, and FX6) as a Real-time Streaming Video file. These files are essentially raw, unfinalized video streams created when a recording is unexpectedly interrupted - typically due to battery failure, power loss, or a system crash - before the camera can write the final headers to close the file.
Because .RSV files lack the standard container structure (headers and indices) found in MP4 or MXF files, they are completely unplayable in standard media players like VLC Media Player or editors like Adobe Premiere Pro. Users often encounter these files after a disastrous shoot, believing their footage is lost.
To use the footage, the file must be "converted" (technically repaired or re-wrapped) into a valid container.
