About RN files
The .rn file extension has two wildly different primary uses in the real world. Most commonly, it acts as a marker for files that have been encrypted by malicious software, specifically the STOP/Djvu or Ranzy ransomware families. These files were originally standard documents, photos, or videos that have been locked using military-grade encryption algorithms. Alternatively, the .rn extension is applied to partially downloaded or renamed MP4 video files by the UC Browser download manager on mobile devices. Historically, it was also associated with RealPlayer media files or SHAREit temporary transfer data.
The disadvantages of this format depend heavily on its origin. If your file is a ransomware victim, it is completely inaccessible and requires a specific decryption key to open. You cannot simply "convert" an encrypted file back to its original format using standard software. If the file is a UC Browser download, it may be incomplete or lack crucial header data, causing standard media players to reject it outright.
If you suspect your .rn file is a renamed video, the best conversion target is MP4. You can often achieve this simply by renaming the extension. For legacy RealNetworks media, converting to MP4 or MKV is recommended. For ransomware files, standard conversion targets do not apply until the file is decrypted.
This file format is notoriously difficult to process because the extension does not guarantee a specific internal structure. Encrypted files are mathematically locked, meaning standard online converters will fail to process them. We can inspect the file's internal signature to determine if it is a raw media file, a temporary chunk, or encrypted data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

The RN Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RN converter.
