A .JPL file is primarily a custom widget library used in UI prototyping. Designers use these files to share and store collections of buttons, forms, and icons for their mockups. Another common use is for Japanese language study lists used by dictionary software. The primary software used to open and edit widget libraries is Justinmind. Language lists are managed by JGlossator or Anki. Other niche uses include document management indexes for d.velop and educational year plans for Smartschool. Users often need to convert .JPL files because they are locked into proprietary ecosystems. A Justinmind library requires the specific desktop application to view the UI components. It is not directly compatible with modern web browsers or competing design tools like Figma. Sharing these files with developers who do not have a Justinmind license is frustrating.
