About RL files

The .rl file extension is most frequently associated with FlexNet Report Logs, generated by Flexera FlexNet Publisher to track software license usage in enterprise environments. These files are critical for IT administrators to monitor "check-outs" and "check-ins" of expensive CAD/engineering software licenses (like AutoCAD or MATLAB). However, the raw data is often unstructured, scrambled, or encrypted, making it difficult to read natively in text editors. Users typically need to convert these logs into structured formats like CSV or XLSX (Excel) to create readable usage reports or audit compliance.

A secondary but significant use (approx. 11%) is within the Mimaki RasterLink workflow, where the file serves as a proprietary RIP (Raster Image Processor) job file containing print settings and vector data for wide-format printers. These are strictly internal files and usually cannot be converted to standard images like JPG or PDF without the original RasterLink software. Rarely, you may encounter an .rl file created by R.viewer, which is simply a list of files on a hard drive; these can be easily converted to TXT or HTML.
