Convert a file to RI

To convert other file formats to the "Documentation Data File" file type, you need software like Ruby RDoc or a similar tool.

About RI files

The .RI file extension primarily denotes a Ruby Documentation Data file generated by the Ruby RDoc utility. It stores parsed API documentation for offline reading via the command-line ri tool. Secondary uses include PLC Retain Information files for CODESYS V2.3 and firmware files for Intel Sound Open Firmware. These files present severe limitations outside their native environments. They are proprietary, marshaled data structures, not plain text. You cannot open a .RI file in a web browser or a standard text editor without seeing scrambled binary characters. This system dependency means standard online converters fail to process them. You generally cannot convert a .RI file directly to a PDF or DOCX document. To get readable documentation, developers must generate HTML files directly from the source code rather than converting the .RI cache. For PLC engineers, the file is tightly bound to the specific hardware and the CODESYS IDE. Because this file format is difficult to open or convert, often only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your RI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SID, CHP and DND files.

The RI Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RI converter.
