About RDP files
The .RDP file extension primarily identifies a configuration file for Microsoft Remote Desktop, storing parameters required to connect to a remote terminal server. These files enable one-click access to remote machines by pre-defining the full address, username, screen mode, and device redirection settings. While convenient, .RDP files pose a security risk; executing an unknown file immediately attempts a network connection, potentially exposing credentials or connecting to malicious servers. Furthermore, the format is often encoded in UTF-16, making it difficult to read in standard text editors without proper decoding, and it lacks portability outside the Windows ecosystem or specific client software. To audit connection details safely without triggering the protocol, users should convert .RDP to TXT. For documentation or compliance archiving of network access points, converting to PDF is recommended. In rare enterprise contexts (approx. 8%), an .RDP file may be a compressed driver package for HP Network Automation; in this case, converting to ZIP allows for the extraction and inspection of the internal driver logic.
Convert.Guru analyzes your RDP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted RPD, RDB, RPB, TXT, RDF, RTF, PDF, JPG, CSM, INT, EXE, RDG and RSA files.
The RDP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RDP converter.
