About RDP files

The .RDP file extension primarily identifies a Remote Desktop Connection file used by Microsoft Remote Desktop. These files store configuration settings like the server IP address, port, username, and display preferences, allowing a user to quickly connect to a remote Windows machine. A minority of .RDP files act as network device driver packages formatted as ZIP archives for enterprise systems like Cisco Network Services Orchestrator. Because Microsoft RDP files are plain text saved in UTF-16 LE encoding, they are often locked to specific Windows environments. Users frequently need to convert these files to easily readable formats like TXT, JSON, or PDF to document server configurations, share access details securely, or audit connection parameters. The main disadvantage of the .RDP format is its lack of cross-platform flexibility; opening it on non-Windows devices without dedicated RDP client software can be frustrating. Furthermore, passwords saved inside an RDP file are encrypted using local Windows user credentials, making them non-transferable and useless on a different PC. Converting .RDP to TXT or XML makes the parameters universally readable. If you have the network driver variant, converting or extracting to ZIP is the standard solution. Standard online converters often fail to process .RDP files because they do not recognize the dual nature of the extension or cannot handle the specific UTF-16 text encoding. We will inspect the file and show the text or internal content. Even if the file uses proprietary Microsoft encryption for passwords, we can parse the readable settings, or extract the contents if it is a network driver archive.

Convert.Guru analyzes your RDP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted RPD, RDB, RPB, TXT, RDF, RTF, PDF, JPG, CSM, INT, EXE, RDG and RSA files.

The RDP Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RDP converter.
