About RDM files

The .RDM file extension is primarily used as a remote connection session data file by Devolutions Remote Desktop Manager. These files store server credentials, IP addresses, port numbers, and user interface preferences in a structured XML format. Another frequent use for .RDM files is storing role-playing game map configurations in JSON format for mapping tools like Dungeondraft or RPG Map Editor. Furthermore, the Anno game series (including Anno 1800) utilizes the same extension for proprietary 3D model assets.

A significant disadvantage of .RDM configuration files is their strict dependency on specific proprietary software. If you share an .RDM export with a colleague who relies on a different connection manager like mRemoteNG, they cannot easily import your session tree because the internal schema is customized for Devolutions. Similarly, the game map and 3D model variants of .RDM are highly restricted. Anno 3D models require specialized fan-made extractors to view, and RPG maps require the exact map-making software that generated them to render properly.

When dealing with session data, the best conversion targets are generic XML, JSON, or CSV to allow data migration to alternative password managers or IT tools. Note that encrypted passwords within the .RDM file will remain encrypted and cannot be converted to plain text by third-party converters. For RPG maps, converting the data to a raster image like PNG or JPG is the standard workflow for sharing visuals with players who do not own the map editor.

Because this file extension serves entirely different purposes depending on the originating software, finding a universal online converter is impossible. Standard converters fail because they cannot determine if the file is an XML database, a JSON grid, or a compiled 3D binary asset. Our engine inspects the raw file headers to detect the true embedded format, giving you a realistic workaround to view the text or extract usable data without installing the original software.

Convert.Guru analyzes your RDM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted RDMK, RDG, RMD, ZIP, POW, SIP, VEH and VMDK files.

The RDM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RDM converter.
