About RCT files

The .RCT file extension is a fragmented format shared across agricultural technology, government compliance, and legacy software development. Users typically encounter this file in one of three distinct contexts, each presenting unique access challenges.

  1. Livestock Electronic Identification (EIC): The most common variety (approx. 18%) is generated by the GES3S EIC system. These files store raw electronic tag data for herd management. A major limitation is the proprietary encoding; without the specific GES3S hardware interface, the file is unreadable. Users need to convert this data to CSV or XLSX to perform analysis in Microsoft Excel or import records into standard farm management ERPs.
  2. Street Works Reinstatement Templates: Utilized by the UK Department for Transport's Street Manager system. These files often frustrate users because they behave like spreadsheets but may not open directly. Technically, many of these are ZIP archives or masked Microsoft Excel templates. A practical workaround is renaming the extension to ZIP to inspect the contents, though converting the internal tables to PDF is safer for long-term archiving and compliance submission.
  3. Visual Studio Resource Templates: A legacy development file used by Microsoft Visual Studio. These define resource scripts (menus, dialogs) for older C++ applications. Modern IDEs may struggle to parse them, requiring conversion to standard RC text files or direct text editing.
