About OCM files
The .OCM file extension is a source of confusion because it serves three distinct, unrelated purposes. Historically, it is most commonly associated with AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) and the DeadAIM add-on, where it functions as a compiled Open Client Module. These are essentially renamed DLL or EXE files used to extend chat functionality, and they are largely obsolete since AIM's shutdown in 2017.
In modern contexts, an .OCM file is often an Orbit Comprehensive Message, a standardized ASCII or XML format used by space agencies (like NASA and ESA) to track satellite trajectories and space debris. Unlike the binary AIM files, these are plain text and can be viewed easily.
A third, niche use case is for Videojet industrial printers, where the file stores an Optical Character Model for verifying printed codes on assembly lines.
Users often struggle to open these files because their PC doesn't know which "OCM" it is. For Orbit Messages, the best conversion target is TXT or XML for viewing in a text editor. For legacy AIM files, there is no meaningful conversion target other than renaming them to DLL for forensic analysis. Videojet files are proprietary and generally require the original industrial hardware or software to interpret.

The OCM Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our OCM converter.
