About QUB files

The .QUB file extension is primarily associated with Planetary Science Data Cubes, a specialized format used by NASA and the USGS within the Planetary Data System (PDS) and ISIS (Integrated Software for Imagers and Spectrometers) environments. These files store multi-dimensional data - typically spatial images (x, y) combined with spectral information (bands) - gathered by spacecraft instruments.

While indispensable for scientific analysis, the .QUB format presents significant hurdles for general access. It is a proprietary, legacy format often requiring command-line tools like ISIS3 or specialized viewers like NASAView to open. The files are frequently large, uncompressed, and contain complex headers that standard image editors like Adobe Photoshop cannot parse. To make this data accessible for presentations, web viewing, or archiving, it is best to convert .QUB files to TIFF or PNG for visual fidelity, or FITS if retaining astronomical metadata is required. For simple document embedding, converting to JPG is efficient, though it sacrifices the multi-band spectral depth.

Convert.Guru analyzes your QUB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted IMQ, COV and PVC files.

The QUB Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our QUB converter.
