About PXI files

A .pxi file most commonly serves one of two completely different purposes, creating a frequent point of confusion for users.

First, in the development world, it is a Cython Include File. Similar to a C header file (.h), it contains shared Cython declarations (Python code with C-like performance) intended to be included in other .pyx modules via the include statement. These are plain text files but are often unreadable to standard software because they lack a common extension like TXT or PY. Developers need to convert them to standard text formats to view them on devices without an IDE, or compile them into C/C++ libraries using Cython.

Second, in educational settings, a .pxi file is a creative project created by Tech4Learning Pixie, a legacy drawing and storytelling tool for K-5 students. These files bundle vector drawings, bitmap stamps, text, and recorded audio into a proprietary format. The major friction point here is obsolescence: parents or teachers often find old .pxi files from years ago but cannot open them because the Pixie software is discontinued or requires a paid license. Because the format is not supported by standard image viewers or web browsers, users desperately need to convert these "trapped" memories into accessible formats like PDF, JPG, or PNG for printing and sharing.

Less commonly, a .pxi file might be a PlexTools Disc Image, a raw sector-by-sector copy of a CD/DVD created by older Plextor hardware. These are useless without specific virtualization software and must be converted to the industry-standard ISO format to be mounted on modern Windows or macOS systems.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PXI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PYX, HX and CLJ files.

The PXI Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PXI converter.
