Convert a file to PXE
To convert other file formats to the "Network Bootloader Image" file type, you need software like iPXE or a similar tool.
About PXE files
The .pxe file extension is highly fragmented and associated with several completely distinct technical formats. Its most prominent uses include network bootloader executable images for the iPXE project, calibration procedure executables for Fluke Calibration MET/CAL software, radiotherapy portal images from Varian Medical Systems, and compiled event scripts for the indie game Cave Story.
Because .pxe files span IT networking, medical imaging, industrial calibration, and gaming, they share a major disadvantage: they are highly proprietary or system-specific. For example, a Fluke calibration file cannot be read without an expensive MET/CAL commercial license, and medical portal images require specialized clinical viewing software. Web browsers and standard desktop text editors will completely fail to process these files, often returning unreadable gibberish or hex code.
Users typically need to convert .pxe files to access the enclosed data on standard hardware. Depending on the exact source, a Cave Story script might need conversion to TXT, while medical images might be exported to DCM (DICOM) or JPG for easier sharing. However, this file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert. Because most .pxe files are closed formats or compiled binaries, standard online converters fail to parse the data structure. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data.
Despite these restrictions, convert.guru serves as a realistic workaround. Just drag and drop your .pxe file to identify its exact format subtype. We can inspect the file, reveal raw text, and show internal hex content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PXE file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The PXE Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PXE converter.
