About PW files
The .pw file extension designates two distinct file types: a mesh generation project file for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis, or a compressed custom firmware package for Android TV boxes. The CFD mesh files are created by Pointwise, a professional engineering tool owned by Cadence. The Android firmware files are distributed by Pulpstone for flashing set-top boxes, and rely on standard archive tools like 7-Zip or WinZip. Users often struggle with both formats. The Pointwise format is an expensive, closed, and proprietary engineering file. Without an active software license, opening the 3D mesh is impossible. Pulpstone firmware files present a different issue: they are intentionally disguised. While the file claims to be a .pw, the underlying data is actually a standard 7z or zip archive. This confuses operating systems and frustrates users trying to extract their ROMs. To fix this, rename or convert Pulpstone .pw files to zip or 7z to extract the internal boot images safely. For Pointwise project files, you must use the original software to export the grid data to neutral 3D targets like .CGNS or STL. Proprietary engineering formats like Pointwise are notoriously difficult to convert because only the original software can properly parse the structured mathematical data.
