About PVD files

The .PVD extension primarily serves as a ParaView Data file, a sophisticated XML-based container developed by Kitware for the ParaView scientific visualization application. Unlike a standalone 3D model, a PVD file acts as a master index - a "collection" file that references other external data files (like VTI, VTP, or VTU) to represent time-steps or partitioned datasets in fluid dynamics and structural analysis simulations.

The primary problem for users is that a .PVD file is often useless on its own. Because it relies on relative paths to referenced files, moving just the PVD file breaks the dataset, leaving you with an empty visualization. Furthermore, these files are strictly for scientific analysis and are not natively supported by standard 3D tools like Blender or Unity, nor can they be opened in standard web browsers. Users typically need to convert these complex datasets into portable formats.

For 3D printing or geometry interchange, the best target is STL or PLY. For web-based visualization, converting to GLTF or X3D is recommended. If you are dealing with a Polytec vibration measurement file or a Pixela ImageMixer project (two less common uses of the extension), these are proprietary binary formats that generally require their specific vendor software to export data to CSV or standard video formats like MP4.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PVD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PDF, NB, VPD, PVTU, PVTI and PVTK files.

FAQ

If you want to convert PVD file to EXE, MSI, APP, DMG, DEB, RPM, PKG, RUN, SH, BAT, CMD or COM, you can use ParaView or similar software from the "Scientific Data Visualization" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert JAR, APP, SCR, IPA, COM, AAB, PS1, DMG, VBS, EXE, XAPK or MSI files to PVD, try ParaView or another comparable tool in the "Scientific Data Visualization" category.

The PVD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PVD converter.
