About PVTU files

The .PVTU file is a specialized XML-based header used in scientific visualization, specifically for Parallel VTK Unstructured Grids. Unlike a standard VTU file which contains the actual 3D mesh and data, a .PVTU file typically acts as a "traffic controller," referencing multiple external VTU files (partitions) stored in a subfolder. This architecture allows supercomputers to process massive simulations by splitting the workload across thousands of processors.

For the average user, this format is highly problematic. First, you cannot simply "open" a .PVTU file if the referenced VTU part files are missing or if the directory structure has been altered - a common issue when files are emailed or moved. Second, standard 3D software like Blender or Adobe Dimension cannot natively read .PVTU files. To use this data in standard design, web, or analysis workflows, you must convert it.

For 3D modeling and printing, the best practice is to merge the parallel partitions into a single VTU or OBJ file. For data analysis, converting the field data (temperature, pressure, etc.) to CSV allows for easy viewing in Microsoft Excel.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PVTU file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PVD, PVTK and PVTP files.

The PVTU Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PVTU converter.
