Convert a file to PUF
To convert other file formats to the "Firmware Update File" file type, you need software like Paradox InField or a similar tool.
About PUF files
.PUF files are primarily used as firmware update packages for hardware devices. The most common creators are Paradox Security Systems for their alarm panels, and Crestron Electronics for their smart home and AV control systems. It can also stand for Programmable Universal File used in Humax satellite receivers. Additionally, in data analytics, a .PUF file represents a Public Use File, containing anonymized survey or tax return data from organizations like the Philippine Statistics Authority or the IRS.
To apply firmware updates, users typically rely on specialized utilities like the Paradox InField Update Utility or Crestron Toolbox. These tools push the binary data directly to the hardware. For tax and survey data, analytical software like TAX-RATER or custom database tools are required.
The major disadvantage of .PUF firmware files is their strictly proprietary nature. They are closed binary files designed solely for specific hardware. You cannot open them in a text editor or standard software without encountering gibberish. Furthermore, standard online converters fail completely because there is no logical target format (like a document or image) for a compiled device firmware payload.
If your .PUF file is a survey dataset (Public Use File), the goal is usually to convert it to a CSV or XLSX format for analysis in Microsoft Excel. For firmware files, conversion is generally not applicable, but extraction is. Notably, Crestron .PUF packages are often standard ZIP archives under the hood, containing XML manifests and binary payloads.
This is why this file format is difficult to open or convert. Often only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format (like a standard ZIP archive), viewing or extraction may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your PUF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert PUF file to CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT, DB or SQL, you can use Paradox InField or similar software from the "Firmware Update Package" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to PUF, try Paradox InField or another comparable tool in the "Firmware Update Package" category.
The PUF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PUF converter.
