The .PTI extension represents a collision between two high-precision engineering fields: acoustics and structural design. Most frequently, a .PTI file is a PULSE Time Data recording generated by Brüel & Kjær (now HBK) hardware. These files contain raw, uncompressed sound and vibration measurements - often gigabytes of multi-channel time histories - captured during noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) testing.
A major limitation is proprietary lock-in: .PTI files are binary containers that cannot be opened in standard audio players like VLC or data tools like Excel. They require a valid license for the PULSE LabShop or BK Connect suite to view or export. Engineers often receive these files from testing vendors and find themselves unable to access the data without expensive software.
In the construction sector, a .PTI file serves a completely different purpose: it is a structural design project created by PTISlab, the official software of the Post-Tensioning Institute. These files hold calculations and reinforcement layouts for concrete slab-on-ground foundations. Like their acoustic counterparts, they are version-sensitive and difficult to share with clients who do not own the specific engineering software.
