A .psh file primarily serves as a slideshow project file created by Photodex ProShow, a once-popular presentation software. It stores presentation timelines, transition settings, and file paths pointing to images and audio tracks on a local hard drive. Secondary uses include home design project layouts for Punch! Home Design, Microsoft DirectX Pixel Shader code, and material databases for Autodesk PowerSHAPE.
The main disadvantage of the .psh format is that it is deeply proprietary and often obsolete. Photodex closed in 2020, meaning users cannot easily purchase or install the software to open old family slideshows. Furthermore, a .psh file does not actually contain video, photos, or music. It only contains instructions and file paths.
Because of this limitation, standard online converters fail completely when trying to convert a .psh file directly to a video format like MP4 or AVI. This file format is difficult to open or convert because only the original rendering engine can process the layout instructions to export a viewable media file.
