About PSG files
A .psg file is a classic example of a "file extension collision," where the same three letters are used by completely different software ecosystems. The most industrially significant format is the AFP Page Segment, part of the Advanced Function Presentation architecture created by IBM. These files contain image resources (like logos or signatures) used in high-volume mainframe printing streams. They are notorious for being inaccessible on standard Windows or Mac systems without specialized tools like Elixir Viewer or expensive AFP drivers. Users often need to convert these to PDF or TIFF simply to verify the content of a print job without running a physical print.
Alternatively, if the file originated from a gaming context, it is likely a PlayStation 3 graphics container used by Sony. These files store textures and visual assets for the console and are generally unreadable by standard image editors. For retro-computing enthusiasts, a .psg file might be a graphic project from Broderbund Print Shop Deluxe, a legacy program for creating greeting cards and banners. Finally, in educational settings in Greece, this extension denotes a GLOSSA source file - a text-based pseudocode file encoded in UTF-16.
Because these formats are proprietary, hardware-locked, or obsolete, opening them natively is often impossible. For AFP segments and Print Shop files, the best workflow is converting to PDF for archiving or PNG for image editing. For GLOSSA files, converting to TXT or RTF ensures the code remains readable without the original interpreter.

The PSG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PSG converter.
