A .prop file stores initialization properties, system variables, or configuration settings. It is most famous as the build.prop file in the Android operating system, which dictates device-specific settings like screen density, model name, and system tweaks. It is also utilized by Magisk modules, custom GCam mods, and proprietary game engines like the Telltale Tool.
The main disadvantage of the .prop format is its lack of native file association on desktop computers. Because .prop is not recognized by default, opening a system property file on a PC often triggers an annoying 'Windows cannot open this file' error. Furthermore, game-specific .prop files (like those from Telltale Games) are usually compiled or encrypted binary data, making them completely unreadable without specialized extraction tools. For mobile users, modifying an Android .prop file incorrectly with the wrong text encoding will instantly brick the device, forcing a factory reset.
To view, read, or safely share text-based .prop files outside their native environment, you should convert them. For code editing and cross-platform compatibility, convert to TXT, JSON, or XML. If you need to archive the device's system state, convert it to PDF/A.
