About PPKG files

.PPKG files are Windows Provisioning Packages created by Microsoft. IT administrators use these files to configure Windows devices in bulk without deploying full operating system images. They typically contain device policies, network settings, certificates, and sometimes embedded applications or scripts.

These files are built using the Windows Configuration Designer or via PowerShell. Users often face challenges with .PPKG files because they are opaque, proprietary archives. You cannot naturally open them in a standard text editor to see what they do. Applying an unknown package is dangerous because it can silently alter core system settings or install unwanted software.

The most practical "conversion" approach is extraction. Because a .PPKG file is essentially a compressed container, administrators usually want to convert or extract it to ZIP, XML, or plain TXT to inspect the internal customizations.xml file and the payload folder safely.

Standard online converters fail because this is a closed format designed exclusively for the Windows OS.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PPKG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PKG and ISO files.

The PPKG Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PPKG converter.
