The .POC extension serves two distinct, specialized communities: legacy desktop publishing users and bioinformaticians. Most commonly, a .POC file is a Page Object Component used by Broderbund PrintMaster and The Print Shop. These files function as modular assets - containing vector graphics, text frames, or raster images - that users would drag and drop into larger scrapbooking or greeting card projects. The primary problem for .POC holders is proprietary lock-in; these files are often essentially orphaned assets that cannot be opened by modern tools like Adobe Illustrator or standard image viewers. If you don't have a working copy of the specific version of PrintMaster that created them (often dating back to the Windows XP era), your design elements are effectively inaccessible.
In a scientific context, a .POC file may also contain protein pocket atomic coordinates derived from the Pocketome Encyclopedia. These files store 3D structural data used to analyze binding sites on proteins, typically visualized using software like PyMOL. While valuable for research, the format is obscure outside of specific computational biology workflows.
