The .eio extension primarily identifies the proprietary file format used by Evermore Integrated Office (now known as Yozo Office). Unlike standard office suites that use separate files for documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, the EIO format functions as a single "binder" containing multiple data types in one compound file. While this was innovative for linking live data between sheets and documents, it presents a significant barrier today: .eio files are completely incompatible with Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and standard open-source viewers. Users holding these files often find themselves locked out of their own data without access to the specific, legacy Java-based software required to render them. For these documents, the most pragmatic solution is converting the binder contents into standard formats: PDF for unalterable archiving, or DOCX and XLSX if you need to salvage the text and data for modern editing.
Alternatively, in the engineering and architecture sectors, an .eio file is likely an EnergyPlus Invariant Output file generated by the EnergyPlus simulation engine. These are plain text files containing standard output data from building energy models. The friction here is usually trivial but annoying: operating systems do not recognize the extension, preventing double-click access. While these can theoretically be opened by forcing them into a text editor like Notepad++, converting them to PDF ensures formatting is preserved for reports, or converting to TXT/CSV makes the data immediately accessible to other analysis tools without manual file renaming.
